In the Philippines, girls are more likely to be adopted than boys.

For adoptive mother Reina Pante, however, all that mattered was the love she felt upon seeing a picture of her son for the first time.

“We actually wanted a daughter,” she says, “But when I saw Nathan's picture, I said, ‘No, this is my child. This is our child.’”

There are orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children with fewer chances of being welcomed into forever homes. For reasons out of their control, they are considered “less adoptable”, but let's remember that every child has the right to a loving and safe family.

There are orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children with fewer chances of being welcomed into forever homes. For reasons out of their control, they are considered “less adoptable.”

Included in this group are children with special needs. They may have physical or mental disabilities, or they may have been conceived out of rape.

“There are a lot of orphans out there who have special needs,” says Mike Papadopoulos from Philippines Without Orphans. He’s currently in the process of adopting his son with special needs, and he shares, “They need a father too. They need a mother too. They need a home.”

There are orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children with fewer chances of being welcomed into forever homes. For reasons out of their control, they are considered “less adoptable.”

One of these groups consists of children above the age of 4. In the Philippines, older kids are more likely to age out of children’s homes without being adopted and experiencing the love and care of a permanent family.

It's common for Filipino families to prefer adopting infants who they believe have experienced less challenging circumstances than older kids, but adoptive parent and former foster parent Fi Newood reminds us, “We do not need to know the beginning of a child’s story to change the ending.”
