Adoption Consciousness Month 2021

ROHEI Foundation

Every February, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) holds its Adoption Consciousness Celebration, with the first Saturday of the month being Adoption Consciousness Day. Established in 1999, the campaign aims to create nationwide awareness of the growing number of orphaned, abandoned or neglected Filipino children in need of a permanent alternative wholesome family environment. In the previous years, DSWD achieved this through gatherings, media forums, mall help desks, and other activities to help encourage more Filipinos to support the legal adoption advocacy.

This 2021, the celebration is unique as DSWD holds most of its activities virtually. With the theme, Pagmamahal Palaganapin, Legal na Pag-aampon Ating Gawin! (Spread Unconditional Love Through Legal Adoption), they launched live streams, videos, an online helpdesk, and many other ways to promote legal adoption as a form of unconditional love. During some of these online activities, we were able to see familiar faces including people we look up to in the government, friends from fellow organizations, and families we’ve gotten to know in the adoption community. We also got to hear new stories of more inspiring families for the first time. How amazing it was to see how this cause can bring people together, wherever we are in the country and the world.

While the gatherings would have to wait for another time, one good thing about this year’s celebration is that we can all take part in learning and sharing about this campaign. So in case you missed it, we’ve listed down some of the many ways Adoption Consciousness was celebrated:
